This year Deaf Awareness Week was 6th to 12th May. It is promoted by the UK Council on Deafness to raise awareness of the challenges of deafness and hearing loss, which 1 in 6 people in the UK are effected by. Approximately 3.7 million are of working age.

The theme for the awareness week this year is “Connect and Communicate”, aiming to highlight how being aware of all types of deafness and the various communication methods can improve understanding.
Things to remember when talking to someone who is deaf or hard of hearing:
At Citizens Advice Bracknell, we aim to assist hearing impaired people using email, text, touch type or other written forms of communication. We can access BSL interpreters, but the office does have to pay for this service. Citizens Advice Bracknell & District is currently looking for funding in order to provide a better service for deaf clients.
In the meantime, the national website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk, does have BSL signed information for Debt, Employment, Benefits, Consumer, Domestic Abuse, Hate Crimes and Discrimination. Just search the website for “Advice in BSL” to access. We also have an introduction to the service, in BSL.
